Description: This is an antique Gurage African Peoples hand carved and used wooden bowl or plate which was collected from Ethiopia, Africa. This rare, antique Ethiopian Gurage bowl measures 11 inches across the top of the bowl from one side to the other side, 34 inches diameter around the top rim of the bowl and is 4 inches tall. This heavily used bowl is in good condition with a crack which is shown and labeled in the last picture. There is a tribal repair to the crack but the repair has failed a bit and the crack is still visible. Dark patina. The bowl has a small "handle" with a hole for a string of twine as these bowls would traditionally be hung on the walls in the home when not in use. The Gurage people of Africa traditionally inhabit a fertile, semi-mountainous region in southwest Ethiopia, about 125 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa. The Gurage people live a sedentary life based on agriculture, involving a complex system of crop rotation and transplanting. Ensete is the main staple food, but other cash crops are grown, they also raise animals mostly for milk supply and dung. This antique traditional piece of Ethiopian history would be a perfect addition to any African Art collection or a great piece of home decor.
