Description: Victorian dictionary, which once belonged to Monier Monier-Williams, Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University, and author of the famous Sanskrit-English dictionary. This is the 36th edition of Nugent's Pocket Dictionary in English and French, published in Paris in 1842 by Ouiseau. There is a small section at the back which contains an entertaining selection of useful phrases in six languages from Nunez de Taboada's famous vade-mecum, including "Here is the viol [sic] of the drops" and "Let him come in; I will interrogate him myself".Measures 5.75" x 3.75" x 1.5" thick (approx). Weight 340g. Condition: Old dictionary, printed in the 1840s and in fairly good condition for its age. Previous owners' names and bookplate in the front. The pages are in good condition, with one or two neat annotations, and a few tiny ink spots. There are two title pages - one at the beginning of section 2 (ie halfway through the book), and one at the beginning of the vade-mecum (near the back of the book). The pages are firmly bound together, but the covers are somewhat more precarious. The front board is only just attached, and the cover of the spine is missing entirely. Please see photographs.
