Description: Handpainted late Georgian/early Victorian Tea Bowl & Saucer Set (1820-1840) The tea bowl/teacup and saucer are beautifully hand decorated with green flowers and berries with purple leaves joined by a curled purple ribbon with smaller green and purple accents. The inside of the tea bowl/teacup has a green flower with purple leaves that is faded. The saucer is approximately 1" deep as was usual at the time. The handprinted designs in the bottom of the saucer are worn but the designs around the rim of the saucer are in excellent condition without evidence of wear. There are no pottery marks on either of the items. Tea bowl: Height 2 1/2" (6.35 cm); Diameter: 3 1/2" (8.9 cm). The tea bowl is the London shape also known as the Grecian shape. It is so pristine both inside and on the bottom that I believe it was displayed and not used. Saucer: Height internal 1" (2.5 cm )and external 1 3/8" (3.5 cm); Diameter 5 1/2" (14 cm). Like the tea bowl, the saucer is in such pristine condition, I believe it was displayed and not used. The wear in the bowl and the saucer are probably from storage. For most of the nineteenth century (1800-1900) tea was drunk from tea bowls or handless cups. Saucers were deeper as the tea was often poured into the saucers to cool. The saucers were known as sipping saucers as they were also used for drinking tea. From the mid-1800s handles were starting to be added to the tea bowls and then were more commonly known as teacups. The earlier the manufacture of the tea bowls and saucers, the less likely it was for the items to have pottery marks.
