Description: ANTIQUE DECORATED DOWRY WOOD CHEST This antique pine wood Dowry Chest measures 13" long x 9" wide x 7" tall and weighs 3 pounds. It has a paint decorated dovetailed construction including the lid and the original brass hinges. The under paint is a rusty red overlaid with a dark green, and then a lighter cream or gold and blue painted design on the lid and both short sides. Dowry chests were common in the 18th, 19th and early 20th century as they were used to place small usually hand made fabric items the bride took with her to her new home. This chest is in good condition with wear to the overlaid green and lighter cream or gold designs. The original lock is intact, but has no key.
