Description: c. 1840 – 1880 Ambrotype photograph in an elaborately decorated Union Case, behind glass, subtle hand-coloring.This photo depicts a handsome man in fancy attire, wearing a bow tie and pocket watch chain. This piece is in nice antique condition, with very minor damage to the image (see photos). The metal bezel around the photo is pinchbeck, a soft gold colored alloy which is decorated with a beautiful and intricate design. The photo is housed in a "Union Case". Union cases were made from a compound of shellac and wood fiber which could be molded into elaborate patterns and shapes. Most daguerreotypes and ambrotypes were cased in beautiful and elaborate cases as they were expensive when they were originally made. These decorative cases were hinged and folded together like a box to protect the photographic image enclosed within. This case is in excellent condition with only normal wear. The interior is embellished with a dark green colored velvet cover with an embossed design which also helps to protect the delicate photo and bezel. Measures 3" long, 2 5/8" wide and 7/8" deep (when closed).PLEASE, check out all of the pictures, what you see in the pictures is what you will receive in the mail and they are an inclusive part of the description. If you have any questions, please ask BEFORE you purchase. Happy bidding!
