Description: From Thomas Meehan (1826 – 1901), a noted British-born nurseryman, botanist and author. He worked as a gardener in the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew. London between 1846 and 1848, moving afterwards to Germantown in Philadelphia. He was the founder of Meehan’s Monthly (1891–1901) and editor of Gardener’s Monthly (1859–1888). We are separately listing 29 color prints from The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States, 4 vols. (1878–1880) Thomas Meehan, Alois Lunzer (1840–?) chromolithographed by Louis Prang (1824–1909) (Boston, MA. 1879). Louis Prang (1824-1909), a German immigrant, ran a highly successful printing firm in Boston during the late nineteenth century. His company produced high quality reproductions of major artwork and greeting cards using the complex technique of chromolithography. Prang is often referred to as the 'Father of the American Christmas Card' because holiday cards were rarely exchanged in America until his factory began producing them in the 1870s. Prang was of Huguenot descent. The prints are 10" x 7" and are very suitable for framing. They are beautifully printed on heavy paper. A ragged area on the right side from removal from the binding which needs to be matted over (see picture). They have light browning to the right and top margins and a few have a fox mark (see pictures). This specific listing: Houstonia Caerulea, azure bluet, Quaker ladies, or bluets.
