(Collection of various foreign and rare birds ...), by Johann Michael Seligmann, printed by Johann Joseph Fleischmann, published in Neuremberg, 1749-73. The complete work contains 473 plates. This plate originates from a 1768 French edition, volume 1. This work is based on the famous works of George Edwards (A Natural History of Uncommon Birds ...) and of Mark Catesby (Consacre aux oiseaux americains ... / The natural History of Carolina ...), The plates of Edwards and Catesby were re-engraved by Seligmann and some of those by Edwards further embellished by the addition of figures of plants not in the originals. (Zimmer). This is one of the finest German books on birds of the 18th century, preceding and inspiring later works by Audubon, Selby, Nozeman, Barraband, etc. Ref: Nissen 857. Johann Michael Seligmann (1720�1762) was a German artist and engraver best known for his ornithological artwork in Sammlung verschiedener auslandischer und seltener Vogel (Collection of various foreign and rare birds) which included plates based on the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards. Seligmann received his initial training in engraving and art at the Nurnberger Malerakademie and some of his earlier works included the depictions of various rocks and minerals. His other works included the Opera Botanica 1754 written Konrad Gesner. Many of the copper plates that he made bear the initials JMS. Subject: Original ornithological print, number LIII, titled: 'Die grosste Schwalbe' (Le Grand-Martin ou Hirondelle - Hirundo riparia maxima). This is the Largest Swallow.Condition: Excellent, given age. Left edge uneven from binding, the right edge a little browned. General age-related toning and/or occasional light stains from handling.
