Description: This Autograph Book belonged to a devoted fan of Big Band and Jazz Music. He lived in New York in the 1930's and spent every weekend frequenting the Music Halls and Clubs in NYC, collecting signatures and autographs of many, many giants of the day. The history that this book represents is tremendous. This is a rare opportunity to have autographs from this many greats all in one collection! The book has over 60 autographs. 56 of them are identifiable and are of famous performers listed below, including Louis Armstrong, the Andrew Sisters, Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Ozzie and Harriet, Glen Miller, Count Basie, and many, many more. 6 additional autographs have not been identified yet. Along with the book, you will also receive an 11 page Report that has a Bio on each of the 56 performers who autographed the book. Here are the 56 artists who autographed the book: 1. Larry Clinton- Prominent American bandleader. His song "My Reverie" peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard and stayed at the top of the chart for 8 weeks in 1938. The song was his arrangement, sung by Bea Wain. 2. Bea Wain- American Big Band era singer and radio personality. She was the first artist to ever record "Over the Rainbow". But the studio required her to hold off releasing the recording until AFTER Judy Garland sang it on "The Wizard of Oz". 3. Jack Chesleigh- Guitarist with the Larry Clinton Orchestra and also a vocalist. He performed some hits along with Bea Win, including "My Reverie", "Heart and Soul" and many others. 4. Leo White- He played the saxophone and clarinet for the Larry Clinton Orchestra. 5. Walter Smith- A trumpet player for the Larry Clinton Orchestra, and later for Nancy Walker (yes, THAT Nancy Walker, from the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Rhoda. Nancy was also a singer- search on Youtube for the song "I Can Cook, Too") 6. Hugo Winterhalter- An Arranger, Composer and bandleader of the Hugo Winterhalter Orchestra. He arranged songs for most of the popular recording artists of his day, including Dinah Shore, Perry Como, and many others. His hit "Canadian Sunset" sold over 1 million copies. He later became the Music Director for MGM. 7. Ken Murray- An American comedian, actor, radio and tv personality and writer. He was in over 20 movies and had a weekly radio show. He acted alongside John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. In 1965 he was in the movie "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.". 8. Count Basie- An American Jazz pianist, organist, bandleader and composer. He formed The Count Basie Orchestra, one of the most prominent jazz performing groups of the swing era. Billie Holiday sang with the band, as well as Helen Humes (below) and James Rushing (below). The band appeared in a number of major movies. They performed for Queen Elizabeth and he appeared on TV with Fred Astaire. He also performed at Kennedy's Inaugural Ball. 9. James Rushing- An American singer, songwriter, lyricist and pianist. He was the lead vocalist for Count Basie's Orchestra. 10. Helen Humes- An American blues singer, composer, a saucy R & B diva and a vocalist with Count Basie's band. She recorded well over 25 songs. 11. Earle Warren- Alto sax for the "Count Basie Orchestra". He played baritone and alto sax, then became lead altoist and occassionally clarinettist and vocalist. He also led his own bands. 12. Walter Page- An American jazz multi-instrumentalist, song writer and bandleader. He played with Count Basie's band. He could play the tuba, the bass saxophone, and the stringed bass. 13. Bennie Morton- American jazz trombonist who appeared with Billie Holiday on "The Sound of Jazz." 14. Dan Minor- American jazz trombonist. He played in the bands of Count Bassie and many others. 15. Harry James- An American musician known as a trumpet-playing band leader who led a big band to great commercial success from 1939-1946. He also was an actor in a number of films. In 1937 he joined Benny Goodman's Orchestra. Later he formed his own orchestra "Harry James and His Music Makers" and produced the hit "You Made Me Love You", which topped the charts at #5 and later was induced into the Grammy Hall of Fame. His band was also the first high profile orchestra to feature Frank Sinatra! 16. Benny Goodman- An American clarinetist and bandleader known as the "King of Swing". He led one of the most popular swing big bands in the U.S. 17. Tommy Dorsey- An American jazz trombonist, composer, conductor and bandleader. His theme song was "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You." He was the younger brother of bandleader Jimmy Dorsey. One of his big hits was "I'll Never Smile Again", featuring Frank Sinatra. Glen Miller was a member of The Dorsey Brother's Orchestra. In January 1956, The Dorseys introduced Elvis Presley on his national television debut. Over all, Tommy Dorsey had a run of 286 Billboard chart hits! 18. Jack Leonard- A vocalist with Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra, during which he rivaled Bing Crosby as the country's top male singer. 19. Dave Jacobs- Trombone player for Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra. 20. Betty Bradley- She sang with Gray Gordon's Orchestra. She also played with Bob Chester's band and found herself in the spotlight for having so many recordings. She was on the cover of Down Beat Magazine and later toured with Rudy Vallee and Milton Beryle. 21. and 22. and 23. Andrew Sisters (LaVerne, Maxine and Patty)- Need I say more? 24. Betty Hutton- A stage, film and tv actress, comedian, dancer and singer. She appeared in many films and became one of Paramount's most valuable stars. She also recorded numerous singles with Capitol Records. 25. Jimmy Dorsey- Along with his brother Tommy, the 2 formed "The Dorsey Brothers Orchestra" Later, the brothers parted and each started their own orchestra. Jimmy's band jumped to even more fame in the 1940's when he had so many hits that he was known as the "Juke Box King." He also was in a series of motion pictures. 26. Bob (Bobby) Bryan- American bandleader, trombonist and music executive. 27. Ray McKinley- American jazz drummer, musician and bandleader. He worked with Glen Miller for the Dorsey Brother's Orchestra. His friendship with Glen remained over the years and later Ray led the Glen Miller Orchestra. 28. Bob (Robert) Eberly- Bob was an American Big Band vocalist best known for his association with Jimmy Dorsey and his duets with Helen O'Connell. 29. Milt Yaner- A very talented American jazz clarinet player, saxophone player and flute player. He played with the Benny Goodman Orchestra, the Dorsey Orchestra, Louis Armstrong and others. He recorded songs with Billie Holiday, such as "Somebody's On My Mind" and many others. He also recorded songs with Louis Armstrong, such as "C'est si bon" and "La Vie En Rose." 30. Ralph Muzzillo- U.S. jazz trumpeter who played with the Benny Goodman Orchestra and Jimmy Dorsey and Larry Clinton. He made many recordings. 31. Herbert (Herbie) Haymer- An American jazz reedist, primarily known as a tenor saxophonist. He played with Rudy Vallee, Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and others. He led a quintet that included Nat King Cole on the piano. He also recorded many songs with Frank Sinatra, Helen O'Connell and Peggy Lee. 32. Helen O' Connell- A very popular American singer and actress described as "the quintessential big band singer of the 1940s". She had many best selling recordings. Her recording in 1942 of "Brazil" with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra made it to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009. She also had regular appearances of TV shows. 33. Lola Lane- She appeared on Broadway and on movies in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. She appeared in the classic film in 1937 "Marked Woman" alongside Betty Davis. Because of always being cast as a "tough girl" persona, comicbook writer Jerry Siegel, named Lois Lane, the tough fictional Daily Planet reporter (and Superman’s girlfriend), after Lola Lane! 34. Artie Shaw- Immensely popular and innovative as a boundary-breaking swing bandleader, master clarinet player, and composer in the 1930s and 1940s. He also was an actor and an author. He was a top-grossing star and was serious competition with Benny Goodman for the title of “King of Swing”. It is believed that Monty Norman, who composed the James Bond Theme, was influenced by Shaw’s 1938 recording of “Nightmare”. You can listen to “Nightmare” on Youtube and definitely hear the resemblance. 35. Marion Hutton- An American singer and actress, best remembered for singing with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. She was the sister of actress and singer Betty Hutton. Marion appeared in numerous movies as well. 36. Glen Miller- American big band conductor, arranger, composer, trombone player, and recording artist. Glenn Miller and His Orchestra was one of the most popular and successful bands of the 20th century and the big band era. 37. Connee Boswell - Connee Boswell is considered one of the great female jazz vocalists and was a major influence on Ella Fitzgerald. 38. Ozzie Nelson (Oswald Nelson)- An American actor, filmmaker, musician, and bandleader. He originated and starred in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, a radio and television series with his wife Harriet and 2 sons. 39. Harriet Hilliard- Wife of Ozzie Nelson. In1932 she was performing in vaudeville when she met the saxophone player and bandleader named Ozzie Nelson. He hired her to sing along with the band, under the name “Harriet Hillard”. They married in 1935. She also had a successful film career.40. Scat Powell- Vocalist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the 1930s. You can listen to some of his songs on Youtube, such as “Love in Swingtime”. 41. Dick “Stinky” Rogers- He was a singer, comedian, songwriter and pianist, who wrote the lyrics for "Harlem Nocturne". He was a member of the Ray Noble Orchestra and the Will Osborne Band. 42. Eddy Duchin- An American popular music pianist and bandleader during the 1930s and1940s. He became widely popular thanks to regular radio broadcasts, and he was one of the earliest pianists to lead a commercially successful large band. 43. Frances Carroll- Bandleader of the all female band “TheCoquettes”. The orchestra was originally started by Viola Smith (drummer) and her sister Mildred, who played the violin. They hired Frances to be the front woman and bandleader since they could not fill that role AND play their instruments. 44. Viola Smith- Often referred to as the most accomplished female drummer, and the fastest female drummer in the world. She is best known for her work in orchestras, swing bands, and popular music from the 1920s until 1975. She was one of the first professional female drummers and appeared 5 times on the Ed Sullivan Show. 45. Johhny Blowers- An American drummer of the swing era. In 1942 he began performing with the up-and-coming Frank Sinatra, who asked Blowers to record with him. They performed and recorded together regularly until the 1950s. In addition to Sinatra, Blowers performed with Louis Armstrong, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, and Mel Tormé. 46. Col Manny Prager- American alto sax, clarinet, and piano player. In the 1930s, Prager played with Ben Bernie. Musician and band leader Colonel Manny Prager was a 1930s and 40s musician who came into prominence while playing with the famous Ben Bernie Orchestra. 47. Ben Bernie (Benjamin Anzelevitz)-An American jazz violinist, bandleader, and radio personality, often introduced as "The Old Maestro". He was noted for his showmanship. His musical variety radio shows through the 1930s, usually titled, “Ben Bernie, The Old Maestro” received ratings that placed him among radio's top ten programs. Bernie's orchestra recorded throughout the 1920s and 1930s. 48. Louis “Satch” Armstrong- Need I say more? He is one of the most influential figures in jazz. 49. Dick Todd- Nicknamed “The Canadian Crosby” because of his similarity in sound to Bing Crosby. He came to the U.S. in 1938 to sing with Larry Clinton’s Orchestra and soon became a favorite with radio listeners across the country. 50. Russ Carlyle- Orchestra leader, singer and author. At one time he was voted by Billboard Magazine the 4th top vocalist in America, while performing as lead singer with Blue Barron and his orchestra (1936-39). 51. Joe Carbonaro-Played with Mal Hallett and His Orchestra. He played the string bass, violin and brass bass. On Youtube, look up the song "Beale Street Blues" performed by the Mal Hallett Orchestra, and you can hear Joe Carbonaro. 52. Mal Hallett-American jazz violinist and swing bandleader who led a pioneering dance band in the 1920s and a popular swing orchestra in the 1930s. He bested Duke Ellington in a battle of music. Many of his songs can be listened to on Youtube. He also accompanied singer Patti Page when she went on tour in 1950. 53. and 54. Jack and Jane Boyle-Members of the Mal Hallett Orchestra55. Red Nichols- American jazz cornet player, composer and bandleader. He had many bands. One in particular was Red Nichols and His Five Pennies. He was one of the most prolific and influential jazz musicians in the late 1920s and early 1930s, appearing on over 4,000 recordings.In 1959, a biopic was made of his life and career, "The Five Pennies", starring Danny Kaye. 56. Ford Leary- Trombonist and singer with Larry Clinton’s popular orchestra in the late 1930s. On Youtube you can listen to “Jeepers Creepers”. He became a staple on the jazz scene as both a singer and instrumentalist. He scored a big hit with the song “Shadrach”,which became his signature piece.
