Description: This is a historic and Fine Antique American Folk Art Antebellum South MARYLAND - VIRGINIA Woman Portrait Oil Painting on canvas dated to 1821, depicting Sarah "Sally" Chunn (1788 - 1846,) wife of Andrew Jackson Chunn (b. 1768, Maryland - d. 1845, Virginia) who is a descendant of John Chunn (b. 1609,) who's family is one of the first Catholic refugee families to flee England and establish the Catholic colony of what would be known as Maryland in the 17th century. This portrait displays the depiction of a beautiful young brown eyed and black-haired woman, wearing a white headscarf, ornate lace collar, several gold chains, and a bright red brooch pin. The subject stares directly into the viewer's gaze, exhibiting a youthful vitality and vivacious self-confidence, which is unique among the multitude of demure and meek female portraits from the same time period and genre. This piece is exhaustively annotated on the verso of the frame, reading: "Sarah Davis Chunn aged 34 years. Painted by M. Ford in 1821. The Great Granddaughter of Sarah Chunn, May Ashley Lanchart Campbell (?) had the picture retouched and reframed in August 1929, by Chas. B. Jarvis, Washington D.C." I have not found any information on the artist, but perhaps you know more about them or their work? Approximately 25 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 20 x 23 7/8 inches. This painting has obviously been retouched; however, the canvas has also been re-lined. Very good condition for two centuries of age and storage, with expected age-related craquelure, a few small tears, (which have been patched or touched up), and moderate scuffing and edge wear to the antique wooden gilded wood frame (please see photos.) Priced to Sell. This portrait painting captures a lovely and rare image of a member of the upper class Antebellum high society in Maryland - Virginia, a fleeting and fascinating era in American history.
