The history of carved intaglio cameo rings involves the use of hardstones to create seals and jewelry that dates back to ancient times. Ancient Sumerians created the first cameos, which were often used as seals. Ancient Greeks used cameos as currency and in the Roman Empire cameos were popular and often used as signet rings.
