Description: For sale is an interesting plate. The blank was made at Tournai and the design painted on it by the Hague in the Netherlands but the mark is for John Mortlock who was an English dealer in the 18th century. John Mortlock & Co. was located at Oxford St. and Orchard St. in London and was established in 1746. There is lots of China / porcelain out there with a stamp on it mentioning him but I have never seen just a gilt script like this. It would obviously be an early piece for him as this plate dates to the 18th century. Just neat to see how many unusual marks are still out there one has not seen before. The decoration of this plate is superb! It is hand painted with a bird scene in the center, a nice blue and gold design with floral garlands in between on the rim and a nice shape to the porcelain itself. There are versions of this design out there with the center scene painted by the famous Fidelle Duvivier but I don't think he painted this one here. Either way it is a great plate and the soft paste porcelain is always a treat. The piece is in great condition with some wear and use marks normal to soft paste pieces from this period. It displays nicely. It is 0.75 inches tall and 8.875 inches in diameter.
