Description: A little history lesson first, courtesy of ThePotteries.org and BritishMuseum.org ... Minton & Co. was a pottery and porcelain manufacturer. The factory was founded in Stoke-on-Trent in June 1793 by Thomas Minton (1765-1836), who was succeeded on his death by his son, Herbert Minton (1793-1858). The factory traded under various styles until 1845, when Minton & Co. was adopted. In 1849, Herbert Minton engaged a young French ceramic artist, Léon Arnoux, as art director. Arnoux remained with the Minton Company until 1892. This and other enterprising appointments enabled the company to widen its product ranges, one of the first innovations being the very colourful and highly successful Majolica ware launched at The Great Exhibition of 1851. When Herbert Minton died in 1858, Colin Minton Campbell took over direction of the firm. The partnership with Hollins was dissolved in 1863. In 1868, the firm split into two parts, one for tiles only, the other for china (though it also made tiles). Colin Minton Campbell took the china works, and Hollins the tile works. From about 1873 - 1879, the china works line was known as Mintons. And now on to this beautiful piece ... This listing is for an AWESOME antique oval platter made by Minton & Co. in their Trophy pattern with an English Registry mark showing that this piece was registered on October 7, 1867 - just before the company split in half. The registry mark also tells that the type of material is ceramics, and the Parcel No. is 4 - a code indicating the company that registered the piece. Measures 15 1/2" X 12" No chips, cracks, repairs, or other unusual wear. There are a few pock marks on the bed of the platter, and crazing throughout consistent with age. If you are a collector of Minton & Co./early Mintons pieces, here's a chance to add to your collection!
