Description: Antique ( circa 1856 ) 1/4 Plate Gutta Percha Thermoplastic Case with Sphereotype Ambrotype photo. The case measures 4" wide by 5" long by 3/4" thick ( measured closed ) and holds a 1/4 plate daguerreotype / Sphereotype / Ambrotype measuring 3 1/4" by 4 1/4" The case is in good antique condition with age appropriate wear from handling, some chipping on the outside perimeter as can be seen in the photographs. The hinges are in good condition. It is made by A.P. CRITCHLOW & Co. Manufacturer. There is some damage to the manufacturers label on the inside but it is mostly still legible. It has a handwritten inscription from the photographer. Patent Dated May 27 1856. Very Nice Thermal Plastic Case depicting ROGER de COVERLY and the GYPSIES FORTUNE. The photograph inside depicts a handsome young man in a bowtie. This is a relievo ambrotype / "sphereotype". The image is clear and in good condition. The black paint on the back is applied in silhouette style ("relievo") and it is cracking and has some missing spots, which are visible on the front of the image however this is not damage to the emulsion. There is a crack in the bottom right corner of the glass and some spots of discoloration around the edges. The photographer is E.C. Ely from Greenfield Massachusetts and the photo is dated June 27 1857.
