The "Lost Town of Lanier" was the first county seat of Macon County in 1838 located on the main stage line between Tazewell & Columbus, six miles north of Oglethorpe. The Central of Georgia Railroad extended its tracks to Oglethorpe and by 1870 nothing was left to mark the business center of Lanier.
