Description: ORIGINAL 1799 'VUE GENERAL DE LA GRANDE COLONNADE ET DE RUINES DE PALMYRE' PANORAMIC ENGRAVING FROM "VOYAGE PITTORESQUE DE LA SYRIE, DE LA PHOENICIE, DE LA PALESTINE, ET DE LA BASSE EGYPT' BY LOUIS FRANCOIS CASSASThis is just a great original piece. This is one of two original 1799 panoramic engravings that are from the important book done after the travels of Louis Francois Cassas through today was it is basically the Middle East. For those not familiar with this book I have included the description of the book below. From what I understand, many of the plates were single sheets and some were double sheets. Then there were a few examples of these very large panoramic views that were double folded sheets. This is a very large engraving with image measures 14 5/8 x 36 inches on sheet measuring 20 3/4 x 38 inches. Original folds as issued. Some minor soiling and a few small edge tears but overall a very good example. Untouched and unrestored. Not laid down. Really a stunning example of this scarce original view of the Palmyra ruins opposite the ruins of the Temple of the Sun (the other large engraving I am also offering). An incredible dark rich impression. Do your own research on this engraving. Often the entire volumes sell for low to mid five figures. Individual prints sell from the low hundreds to the low thousands and actually, I cannot find another example of this print having sold or being for sale. I have found one example of this print in the Harvard Art Museum but that is it. Really a stunning example. If you like these or collect these views, check my store for the other I am offering. FREE SHIPPING ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES - EVEN IF YOU PURCHASE BOTH! For those not familiar with the book the description Christies used in selling an example reads: "Cassas's monumental pictorial account of his travels in the Middle East was commissioned by the French ambassador to the Ottoman court. Cassas travelled in Egypt, Asia Minor, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Cyprus, drawing many sites which had never been recorded in print before. He also drew scenes from daily life, including a desert caravan, a wedding, and street scenes. The work was intended to comprise 330 plates, with accompanying text, but only 30 parts were issued, without a title page, and with text to accompany the first seven parts only. The present set includes the bifolium of text which accompanied the first delivery of plates. Copies vary in the number of plates: Atabey considers 'around 180' as standard. Atabey 201 (179 plates); Blackmer 295 (178 plates; wrongly described as 180); RIBA 580 (183 plates); Brunet I, 1616; Cohen-de Ricci 204-5 (173 plates, and also mentions an unspecified copy with 192); Monglond IV, 993-1005 (180 plates).
