THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM ~ A fired US .577 caliber 3-ring pressed and turned (sometimes incorrectly referred to as Swaged) rifle bullet, with a 6-spoke cavity, rifling marks, a ramrod impression, and appears to have been fired into very soft ground. This relic was recovered from the Antietam Battlefield in Maryland. Northern manufacture, pressed and turned with 'spokes' in the base. These are often mistakenly referred to as 'swaged' bullets. These were produced in machines made by J.D. Custer of Philadelphia. After a slug was pressed to form the nose and cavity, it was turned on a lathe to cut the three grooves. The Spokes in the base were formed by the lathe chuck.' - From A Handbook of Civil War Bullets & Cartridges This fired .577 caliber 3-ring pressed and turned (sometimes incorrectly referred to as Swaged) Rifle Bullet, with rifling marks and a ramrod impression, appears to have been fired into very soft ground. This relic was part of an Antietam area relic hunter's collection that was sold at auction in Maryland in June of 2011. Although the relics were identified as having been recovered at Antietam, unfortunately, no specific find locations were given. A provenance letter will be included. All of the collections that we are offering for sale are guaranteed to be authentic, and are either older recoveries, found before the 1960s when it was still legal to metal detect battlefields, or were recovered on private property with permission. Land on Battlefields that is now Federally owned, or owned by the Trust, was acquired after the relics were recovered. We will not buy or sell any items that were recovered illegally, nor will we sell any items that we suspect were recovered illegally. Thank you for viewing!
