Description: Anno 1579: Sensational Oxford University letter with historical background! Newly discovered! This letter from 1579 has a notable historical context. About 60% of the letter remains intact. It bears a collection mark in pencil. The letter opens with the name of Dr. Matthew, the vice-chancellor, identified as Toby Matthew(1546-1628), who served as vice-chancellor briefly in 1579, thus dating the letter. The Latin is incredibly complex and references numerous Oxford masters and students, including one who has recently passed away, as well as lists of very interesting books. It appears to be addressed from Oxford to a Mr. Edward, or someone with the name Edward. Assuming it starts with "Doct. Matthaeus ...", the letter begins by discussing the election of Tobias Matthew (1546-1628) as vice-chancellor of Oxford in 1579, confirming the date of the letter. The writer expresses a preference for Dr. Forest, who unfortunately died on June 1st, and then enumerates many Oxford academics involved in the election, including a theologian, a medical doctor, a Greek expert, and others, who should be easily identifiable. The most intriguing and interesting part is the section beginning "Ex eo enim tantam cepi ...". The writer describes his unhappy life in Oxford, lamenting his tiny, unpleasant room and the tedious days spent debating basic dialectic principles, which he despises. He then lists numerous books he wishes to sell, with the prices he desires, sometimes comparing them to retail prices in London. This implies the recipient might have been a bookseller, which makes sense if the letter ended up as binding material in a bookshop and was later recycled in bookbinding. After the extraction, the importance of this fragment was recognized and it probably passed into the hands of a clever collector. That's why we have a collector's note in pencil. The books listed include: a large folio printed in Antwerp by Plantin for 7 shillings; commentaries by Hadrianus Junius (1511-1575) in Greek for 12 shillings; Paulus Manutius on Cicero's orations for 2s.6d.; on his letters to Atticus for 3 shillings; and his commentaries on the Ad familiares printed in Frankfurt by Andreas Wechel, priced at least 6 shillings for two volumes, along with other books printed by Wechel, a fine lexicon by Johannes Scopula printed in Paris by Etienne, etc. These editions should be easily identifiable. This letter is potentially very valuable for its firsthand account of life at Oxford University in 1579, especially as a source on the history of the Elizabethan book trade.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I recommend consulting a transcription specialist for this historical document!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The price is £1900.
