Born in the former Soviet Union, Kharitonovs first pipe was a gift, carved from cherry wood by his brother; years later, after happening upon a store in his home city that sold Italian Manno briar, he decided that he would try carving his own pipes. Over the next years he would experiment with shapes and styles, gradually building up a cult following on Russian- and English- speaking pipe forums. Though he credits Victor Yashtylov, Misha Revyagin, and Alexey Kharmalov as sources of inspiration, Kharitonovs pipes are in the best of ways immediately recognizable as his own. While Andrey Kharitonov is well known for his avant-garde pipe designs, he has shown himself to be highly versatile over the years. You could even say that his work has gone through periods, with this particular pipe coming from one where he turned to more classical shapes. It is a tall, slightly canted billiard, hand-carved so as to express the excellent flame grain patterns underneath, with a slender shank and swirling ebonite stem. This Kharitonov is also completely unsmoked, having come to us through our trade-in program from a fellow admirer of Andreys work.
