Vall del Madriu - Perafita-Claror On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the designation of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004 due to the value of its landscape. The preservation of such a large valley is an unusual fact and the only case that can be found in the Pyrenees. Located in the south-east of Andorra, it occupies an area of 4,247 hectares. This territory coincides with the river basin of the Madriu River, which represents almost 10% of the area of Andorra, and is distributed among the parishes of Encamp, Andorra la Vieille, Sant Julià de Laria and Escaldes-Engordany. This space has been defined as a peripheral protection zone which has an area of 4,902 ha. The addition of the areas of the central area to that of the peripheral zone represents about one fifth of the Andorran territory. The land ownership of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley is 99% municipal. The rest, around 1%, belongs to about 30 private owners and covers just over 42 ha.
