Description: NOTES OF TRAVEL IN SOUTH AFRICA CHARLES J. ANDERSSON CAPE TOWN: C. STRUIK 1969 A limited edition (number 473 of 750) facsimile reprint of the 1875 first edition. 22 x 14 cm. xiii + 344 pp + plates. HB/DJ This is the last record of the adventures of the author, in what is now known as German South-West Africa, the narrative being continued up to the time of his death on the banks of the Cunene River. The volume contains a description of a battle between the Namaquas and Damaras, the latter having been led by the author, who was severely wounded in the contest. Other chapters contain information respecting the Ovambo, a warlike race in the north, and there are interesting notes about the game birds of the country and the river Cunene. (Mendelssohn, South African Bibliography) The editor notes in his preface that readers should not expect the sporting adventures they had grown used to in Andersson's previous works. He was severely wounded in a battle with Namaquas that curtailed his hunts for big game. There is, however, an interesting chapter on hunting leopard. (Czech, Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books.) NOTES OF TRAVEL IN SOUTH AFRICA CHARLES JOHN ANDERSSON CAPE TOWN: C.
