Ancient Excavated Tannish Brown Clay Spindle Whorl Bead From Mali, African Trade

Description: This is a tannish brown clay spindle whorl which was excavated from Mali. Although spindle whorls are often collected and strung like beads they are actually antique / ancient tools which were used for the utilitarian purpose of spinning thread by ancient weavers from the Niger River area and most especially the ancient city of Djenne. Spindle whorls have been used since 1000 AD. See 'Beads of the World' page 32 by Peter Francis. This spindle whorl is in pretty good rustic condition with some old worn spots, largest one being on the spindle whorls side, a small scar on the bottom and a very old worn chip on the edge of the top perforation. This specimen measures 1.40 inches long by 1.77 inches wide. Perfect for adding to any ancient bead collection, African trade bead collection or for jewelry applications.
