An Original Vintage Mid 50s Early 60s Harold Altman Etching "Park with Figures"

Description: Offered here is an original etching by Harold Altman that dates to about the mid 1950s to very early 1960s. Outside the platemark it is signed at the bottom right corner, titled "Park with figures" in the center, and identified as "artist Proof" at the bottom left corner, all in pencil. The etching, between platemarks, measures 8-3/4 x 6-3/4 inches, and it is printed on a sheet of medium weight, wove paper that measures about 12 x 10 inches. I have found only one other example of this rare print that is in the permanent collection of the North Carolina Museum of Art, a donation in 1964. CONDITION: The etching has been cleaned in recent times and displays a very fine impression with well defined platemark all around. Verso, there are remains of paper tape and cloth mounts at the top corners. There also appears to be very, very faint remains of matburn. Although the previous owner had it cleaned, it seems odd that it was set back onto its original mounting of a sheet of sturdy paper fixed to a paper card backing. It is accompanied by what appears to also be the original mat composed of Masonite board with beveled inner edges and covered with a thin fabric. The back of the Masonite board has four strips of thick paper (that have moderate to heavy foxing), which provides a buffer between the artwork and the Masonite. Although it was also set into the original frame, the item is being sold without the frame due to the weight of the very thick glass sheet and dense wood of the frame. PLEASE REVIEW ALL IMAGES. About Harold Altman:Born in the Bronx on April 20, 1924, Harold Atman was an American lithographer, etcher, painter and teacher known for his images of Central Park, New York and parks in Paris. He used lithography and etchings, prmarily, but also executed some fine paintings. He received numerous awards and fellowships, had many one man exhibitions, his first being in 1951 at the Galerie Huit, Paris. He attended the Art Students League, 1941-42 and Cooper Union, (Graduate in Fine Arts), 1941-47, both in New York City. Altman served his country with the 937th Engineer Camouflage, European Theater of Operations during World War II, 1942-45.In 1962 he moved to Lemont, Pennsylvania, setting up his studio in an abandoned nineteenth-century church. He produced his first lithographs at the age of twelve and honed the craft of lithographs for the next sixty-five years, producing over 1,200 unique editions of lithographs and etchings. For many years he had his own printing press and printed his own work. Altman then began a long association with Atelier DesJobert and Atelier George LeBlanc to print his work in Paris. During those years the artist would spend extended periods of time in Paris, which resulted in wonderful images of Paris and other European cities. His one man shows exhibited at the Martha Jackson Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Peter Deitsch Gallery, New York, NY; San Francisco Museum of Art; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; Milwaukee Art Center; Wustum Museum of Art, Wisconsin; National Academy of Art, Turkey; Kunsthandlung Goyert, Germany; Galleria Prova, Japan, and others.Harold Altman's work can be found in most museum collections around the world including the Museum of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Brooklyn Museum of Art; National Gallery of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam; Kunstmuseum, Switzerland; Victoria and Albert Museum, England, and others.
