Specimen Background information: Amethyst is the purple variety of the mineral Quartz, and it’s the most valuable and prized variety. Its name is derived from the Greek "amethystos", which means "not drunken", as Amethyst in antiquity was thought to ward off drunkenness. Amethyst is most prevalent as small stubby pyramidal crystals. However, most often as protruding clusters of pyramids on a matrix base. These "pyramids" can be quite large. As with this featured specimen, the crystals are of a good size, most of them are up to 1 cm. The Amethyst mineral is composed of Silicon dioxide. Its purple coloring is usually caused by impurities of iron or manganese compounds. Its color often range from light to dark purple and this featured specimen has a very rich dark purple color.
