Description: Original oil painting on canvas plus a small portrait drawing of a horseman by American artist Benjamin Curtis Porter (1843-1908) . The painting is a handsome academic study of rocks on a grassy slope in a mountainous landscape. It is signed on the reverse of the bottom stretcher, I bought this and the drawing of the gentleman rider, signed with Porter's estate stamp, at a William Doyle estate tag sale in the early 1980s, the estate was from a family that was heir to a large number of Porter's works. The oil landscape measures 11 x 17 inches, the equestrian portrait drawing measures 8 x 4 1/2 inches. Both pieces are in fine condition, see photos, and are ready for framing. Benjamin Curtis Porter (1843-1908) was an American painter best known for his portraiture. A pupil of Dr. Rimmer and Albion Harris Bicknell in Boston, he studied at Harvard and continued his art education with several trips to Europe in 1872, 1875, 1878, and 1881. Cities which particularly interested him were Paris and Venice. He was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design, New York, in 1878, and a full academician in 1880. Porter was a member of the Tuxedo Club and the National Arts Tavern Club in Boston. His mark was made in New York in 1877 when a group of works he exhibited at the NAD Annual caused something of a critical sensation. He was soon elected to the Academy's membership (although he had to wait until 1903 to be elected to the Society of American Artists), and in 1883 he opened a New York studio, dividing his time for several years between Manhattan and Boston. His summers were usually spent in Newport, Rhode Island.
