Description: This hard-to-find book in the Woodcraft Series has light tan cloth boards with black text on the cover and spine with animal illustrations in dark brown. The spine is worn at the top front and has a small tear at the top rear, also with wear at the bottom of the back strip. Both the front and rear boards show some darkening along the edges but there is no edge wear to the boards. Corners are all sharp with no bumping but have slight wear. Spine is firm with no cracking to the endpapers. Text block is solid with all pages firmly attached. Slight age tanning throughout. There are two family inscriptions on the front free endpaper. All interior pages are clean with no tears, cracks, or other previous owner marks. Fully illustrated with hundreds of black & white photographs and illustrations. 359 pages. Dimensions: H – 8-1/4” W – 5-1/2” “American Boys’ Book of Wild Animals” (1921) was the fourth book in the series following “Bugs, Butterflies and Beetles (1915), Signs, Signals and Symbols (1918), Camp-Lore and Woodcraft (1920) and finishing with Birds and Brownies of the Woods (1923). Daniel Carter “Uncle Dan” Beard (1850 – 1941) was born into a family of artist in Cincinnati, Ohio. He went onto become an American illustrator, author, youth leader, Georgist and social reformer. Beard founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905, which he later merged with the Boy Scouts of America (1910). His series of articles for St. Nicholas Magazine formed the basis for “The American Boy’s Handy Book” still in print today. At the Student Art League he met Ernest Thompson Seton in 1883 and illustrated several books for Mark Twain. As one of the first National scout commissioners he served for 30 years and helped his sister organize the Camp Fire Girls. Boy Scout Troop 1, believed to the one of the oldest continuously charted Boy Scout Troops in the US was founded by Beard.
