White sulfur springs Virginia August 20th 1863 Dear mother I will now employ my view spare moments and answering your welcome letter of the second and 9th of this month which I received last night it is with feelings of pleasure rather than regret that occupy my mind when I look back on the 20th of August one year ago today and bring to mind the various thoughts that were passing through my brain and I have since come to the conclusion that I did perfectly right and coming out here to battle for my country's rights and I have never yet had cause to alter my mind and this war cannot last much longer after it begins to be a little cooler I have great hopes of being able to come home and live and well and hear let me tell you not to pay any attention to the idol stories told by the men from this battery as there is not the least possibility of their knowing for those men that are there in the hospital were sent back pretty soon after the battery left Massachusetts and if you could only send them to some place where I could get a hold of them I would tap his Claret bottle. Or in plain words punch hismean contemptible head and give him a bloody nose to pay for his telling any such lies about me there is such a certain set of men in this battery that bragged a great deal about their knowledge of horses and all that sort of stuff before we left but I told them that for my part I was afraid of horses and did not care about having anything to do with them and so I chose a place which I kept until one of my drivers died and then I was put on his horses and have driven a pair ever since well after I have drove my horses a little while I was to drive them down to water without any bridal halter on either of them and used to guide them with my knees and if anyone else besides myself came up behind them they would kick and would bite them but I could go and unhitch them and take them out into the field and make both of them play with me and I could ride any ugly horse and ride better than they and they paid that felt very smart and they guessed that the government had better hire me for a second to tame horses they were mad you see. And so for that reason they like to write horse to their friends is that it will get to you and father that I am very careless and venturesome to be sure I have been that at 5 or 6 times but you'll see that I am like the man that got cornered up under an ? and was not hurt when folks asked him how he felt and what he was thinking about he said he kept thinking I ain't dead yet I ain't dead yet and when I hear a bullet go singing by my devoted head and don't get hit merrily wink at them. And say I ain't dead yet at Williams port MD we're going in a swimming and some of us had got our clothes off and got into the water when three or four rebs made their presence known by a volley of mini balls flying around us we left left our clothes to get got then again all safe but such firing don't amount to much there was one (ni-gg-r) killed and that was all he was left to bury himself for me left there and went to Harpers ferry and then over into the Old Dominion must stop goodbye give my love to all the folks signed a.a.b. There again so very interesting content in this letter is a nice longer letter how's the original envelope. Covers a very interesting. Of time I am speculating that it was Mosby's Partisan Rangers. That he escaped from as they were in the area and had quite a large capture of this same battalions soldiers I think just prior to this letter. Really an interesting and candid letter.
