Rare Original 16th Century Dated 1537 Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor Partisan Polearm Click images to enlarge Description Up for Consideration is a Incredible Original 16th Century Dated 1537 Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I (As King) Eastern Austrian State Partisan Polearm! c1537 This is a remarkable example of a 16th Century Partisan, which bears the "F" marking for Ferdinand I, as King and the future Holy Roman Emperor. It has a 1537 date and markings on the reverse side show two eagles, as well as parts from both the Coat of arms of Austria and the Coat of arms of Hungary indicating that this originated from one of the eastern provincial states of Austria or Western Hungary. The Partisan, a type of polearm weapon, was commonly used by infantry soldiers in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. It would have been approximately 84 inches long, but has shortened to a hand help weapon probably after a battle. The Partisan with a Steel top of approximately 10 inches that features a formidable 3 blade designed head measuring 6.6 inches long by 4.0 inches wide with a 4 3/4-inch double-edged spear point which has been rounded over the past 500 hundred years. The spear point was designed to penetrate armor and deliver lethal blows to enemies in close combat if the need arose. There is 19 inches remaining of the original wood haft and the bottom iron haft point which would secure it to the ground during a battle charge. It shows remnant of the cloth tassels that once decorated this polearm and could had been replaced sometime later in the 17th or 18th century. *Condition is completely untouched and commensurate with the 500+ age of the piece so please note all images before bidding. Ferdinand I, the monarch whose mark is inscribed on this Partisan as an “F”, was one of the most influential rulers of his time. Ferdinand I (10 March 1503 – 25 July 1564) was Holy Roman Emperor from 1556, King of Bohemia, Hungary, and Croatia from 1526, and Archduke of Austria from 1521 until his death in 1564. Before his accession as emperor, he ruled the Austrian hereditary lands of the House of Habsburg in the name of his elder brother, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Also, he often served as Charles' representative in the Holy Roman Empire and developed encouraging relationships with German princes. This Partisan is a fascinating artifact that offers a glimpse into the military history of Europe during the early 16th century. Its exquisite craftsmanship and historical significance make it a valuable addition to any collection of antique weapons. The arrival of practical firearms led to the obsolescence of the partisan and other polearms. Despite this, the weapon continued to be used for many years as a ceremonial weapon. Ceremonial partisans can still be seen in the hands of guards at important buildings or events. A great example that comes more than ready for further research and display.
