Description: Amaranthus tricolor Early Splendor is an annual in the Amaranthaceae family. Its native range is tropical Asia. Familiar names include Amaranthus, Chinese Spinach, Fountain Plant, Joseph's Coat, and Summer Poinsettia 'Early Splendor'. Mostly disease free and drought-tolerant. In bloom from mid-summer until early fall. This upright annual grows to around 3-5 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide. The leaves are tricolored, with the outside leaves being chocolatey purple and the inside leaves stunningly hot red. It prefers to grow in full sun with humus-rich soil that drains well. Annual Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly tamp down and cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic, and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
