Description: Beautiful gouache painting by renowned Chippewa-Cree/Assiniboine/Blackfeet artist Algie Piapot of Montana. Piapot was born on the Rocky Boy Reservation in Montana, 40 miles south of the Canadian border. Rocky Boy Indian Reservation is the smallest of the 7 American Indian reservations in the U.S. state of Montana. Established by an act of Congress on September 7, 1916, it was named after Ahsiniiwin (Rocky Boy or Stone Child), the chief of the Chippewa band, who had died a few months earlier. It was established for landless Chippewa (Ojibwe) Indians in the American West, but within a short period of time many Cree (Nēhiyaw) and Métis were also settled there. Today the Cree outnumber the Chippewa on the reservation. Piapot worked in forestry, as an educator, and as a sculptor and artist. Piapot passed away October 4, 2017 in the place of his birth...Rocky Boy, Montana. His work is in the Charles Little Collection in the OSU Museum of Art and the Smithsonian as well as many other private collections and museums.
