Description: This cdv of Princess Alexandra is very unusual in being a Wothlytype. The Wothlytype, invented by the German Jacob Wothly in the 1860s, was an alternative photographic printing process that incorporated uranium into collodion to make a positive print directly on paper. The radioactive effects of the uranium were not fully appreciated at the time. The Wothlytype was one of a variety of new printing processes that aimed to create a ‘permanent photograph’ that did not fade as albumen prints did. While the Wothlytype enjoyed several years of success, it did not have the durability of other ‘permanent processes’ such as the Woodburytype. It fell out of usage after Wothly died in 1873. So, in the midst of millions of cdv's still around today, there are few Wothlytypes, and--in that context--scarcely any of Alexandra.
