Description: LOT OF 8 PRINTS. SOLD AS LOT ONLY. My understanding is that Art in America published a portfolio of 16 prints in 1964 titled Calders Circus, which were reproductions of Calders 1932 drawings of the same subject. These 8 lithos were taken from an estate clear out and are believed to be from that 1964 reproduction portfolio. Although the Ebay template above requires a choice between "original/licensed reprint" these should probably NOT be considered licensed reprints. In particular the Calder Foundation seems to go to great pains to disavow attribution to anything but original Calders to which they assign authentication numbering. In the case of the Circus series, these I believe are the large format 22x30 lithos and are typically in the range of $40K each. Calder originals are +/- 22x30 inches and the Art in America litho repros are +/- 14x19 inches to the best of my knowledge. My understanding is that they are NOT to be considered licensed by or attributed to Calder directly. These prints for sale are as follows: They had been cut to fit frames. They are sold as a lot only. 1. Trapeze 12x16 Has intact signature and date 1931. Some browning at edges. Small smudge just to left of trapeze artist trunk and left rope. This is the only print of the lot with intact signature and date. 2. Highwire 12 x 17 Left side of print with signature 1932 has been cut off and was behind the print in the frame so is lighter in color. Photo shows it placed to right with a space between. One small smudge to left of left stilt walker. 3, Pair Balancing 12 x 16 1931. Date/signature is cut off and repositioned lower left. Some edge yellowing. Small smudge at lower edge (under chair). Some water damage (?) at bottom edge below (about) chair and foot. 4. Juggler 12 x 16 1931 Date/signature cut off and repositioned lower left. Edge browning top. Slight serration right side top and bottom about 1". (can be seen in picture, it is slight) Slight water stain (?) near jugglers left foot. 5. Tiger 10 x 12 Partial signature can be read, no date; cut off at lower right. 2 faint lines above left lions head near top of frame. Yellowing at edges. 6. Highwire Woman 11 x 14 1932 Date/signature cut off and repositioned right bottom.Yellowing at edges. Nice. 7. Tumblers 12 x 16 Signature but no date. Browning right edge. Nice 8. Slack Wire 12 x 16. No signature or date but you can see where it was once cut off and repositioned! Yellowing at edges. Very light smudge and tiny tear at bottom center. Overall these prints are quite fine as studies of Calder. Reproduction is very good. Each print is super enjoyable and worthy of framing. Detail is excellent. Sold unframed. No frames. Can be shipped flat or rolled at buyers request. USPS Priority Mail.
