Casa del Fauno Date: c1870 Medium: Albumen print on light mount Size of Image: 8 1/8 x 10 1/8 inches Size of Mount: 11 x 13 7/8 inches Condition: Rich tonal image, sharp and clean, mount shows some aging/spotting at edges, edges rubbed/chipped. Other: Excellent early view of the Casa del Fauno in Pompei showing the columns and what looks like Vesuvius in the background. Giorgio Sommer (1834-1914) was born in Frankfurt, Germany where he trained for his craft. His first studio was in Switzerland where he recorded mountains for the Swiss Government. By 1856 he moved to Naples, Italy, eventually partnering with Edmund Behles (1866) who maintained a studio in Rome. Together, they produced and published many images of the architecture, landscape, art objects and portraits through 1874 at which time they went their separate ways. Sommer continued to open several new studios in Naples before his death in 1914. Send questions.
