Description: Ajax The Great Gilt Bronze Bust Statue Antique Inkwell with original glass in wells - 19th C. ~ H 12” x 15"W x 7"D. Very heavy and solid at 22 pounds. This antique bronze sculpture inkwell would be such an amazing and very unique addition to your collection! This is a cast iron bronze bust that was purchased during the late 1800's. Not sure if original form as inkwell or bust added but very similar patina to rest of piece. The bust portion is a French patinated bronze sculpture that was made after the antique original. The sculpture is of the mythological Greek Hero, General Ajax. The sculpture and the casting was done in very fine detail. The General is looking into the horizon. His sash and toga are held at the left shoulder with his medallion. His face is highly detailed with the high cheekbones, sharp nose and opened eyes. The beard on his face as well as his flowing hair are in extremely fine detailing. The Helmut has great detail. I can supply additional pictures upon request. The General's helmet has a crouching panther on the sides. On the body of the helmet are centaurs in combat with humans. On the facial portion of the helmet tailed eagles stand with their wings outstretch. The overall coloring of this sculpture is a very dark color, almost black, from the aging of the metal. Some of the raised areas are lighter in bronze color. I have never polished this or tried to clean it in any way. I preferred the color of the patina. The inkwell measures 12" tall and stands on a base that is approxiately 15"W by 7"D. This sculpture is in excellent antique condition. There are no dents or breakages. I see no flaws in the casting.
