BACKGROUND: The AIDS Resource Center was founded in 1983 as the first residence for people living with AIDS. At first it was and entirely volunteer effort with the first residence being comprised of a few private residential apartments in Chelsea and Greenwich Village in which the owners volunteered their abode to help combat the epidemic ravaging the gay community in New York City.
