Long Description On September 27, 2018, the Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings concerning Dr. Christine Blasey Fords allegations that then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her in the mid-1980s. Advice and Consent is a play formed of interviews, found text, and transcripts, re-arranged, selected, and edited for poetic and provocative effect. The drama is designed as a thought experiment about power, pathos, tragedy, politics, gender, race, and truth. Accompanied by a score written by law professor and violinist Kathleen Kim, it may be either read or performed. Introduction or Preface On September 27, 2018, the Senate Judiciary Committee held hearings concerning Dr. Christine Blasey Fords allegations that then-Supreme Court Justice nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her in the mid-1980s. Dr. Blasey Ford gave her testimony first, and Judge Kavanaugh, who sat on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, followed. This play is formed out of interviews I have conducted with women and men about the accusations, hearings, and confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh. I also created it from found text, namely, transcripts of the September 27 hearing, of protesters arguing with Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) in the moments before the September 28 Senate Judiciary Committee vote on whether to let Kavanaughs nomination proceed to the full Senate, and of Senator Susan Collinss (R-ME) October 5 explanation for why she would vote yes on Kavanaugh the next day.In this work, I re-arrange, select, and edit the testimony of both Dr. Blasey Ford and Judge Kavanaugh for poetic and provocative effect. I also arrange, select, and edit the other texts. In some cases, I have combined interviews into one monologue. I often quote the transcripts and interviews verbatim, which creates an occasional roughness in the dialogues and monologues that reveal the intensity of the speakers emotions.I designed this drama as a thought experiment about power, pathos, tragedy, politics, gender, race, and truth. Accompanied by a score written by law professor and violinist Kathleen Kim, it may be either read or performed.
