Description: From Coalport Pottery in Shropshire. this manufacturer specialized in dinner services and is credited with inventing the technique of transfer ware. In the 1890's it started a substantial export business to the USA and so when the Spanish American War came along it was natural for them to capitalize on it. This 10.5" dinner size plate was one of three designs and was intended for display. The bowl has a bust of the admiral in a laurel wreath frame and the words Manila May 1898. The names of the six major ships in his fleet are printed in ribbons also within laurel wreath frames around the rim with decorations of cannons firing and stylized waves. There are also floral and chain decorations. There is a ruffled rim with a bright hand painted gilt decoration. On the reverse is the mark for Coalport at that time and a model number. Excellent condition with no chips or cracks. This is crazing but you need a loop to see it. It does not show in the photographs for visual observation. Free shipping in the USA.
