Description: Adlai Stevenson II (1900 - 1965) American Politician and Ambassador Adlai Stevenson was named after his grandfather Adlai Stevenson I, who was Vice President under Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897. Adlai's father was Illinois Secretary of State from 1914 to 1917. When Adlai Stevenson was 16 years old he accidentally killed a sixteen-year-old friend while doing a rifle drill with a rifle that had left loaded. He was unable to speak of the incident, except in his later years he wrote to the mother of a similar accident. He told her that her son "must now live for two." Political Timeline During the 1930s Stevenson was instrumental in helping the Midwest cease its isolationism.In 1933 he was appointed Special Attorney for the Agricultural Adjustment Administration.In 1940 the Secretary of the Navy appointed Aslai as Principle Attorney. From 1940-41 Stevenson worked to raise public and military support for the UK and other allies fighting in WW2, which raised strong criticism from the "America First" committee. In 1944, Stevenson went to Sicily and Italy for the Foreign Economic Administration.Stevenson took a temporary position in the State Department in 1945.A year later he went to London to work preparing the United Nations. He was then appointed to the US delegation from 1946 to 1947.Stevenson was the Governor of Illinois. from 1949 to 1953. He was nominated for the presidency twice (1952 and 1956). From 1961 to 1965 Stevenson was Ambassador to the United NationsIn 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis Stevenson proposed a deal to get Soviet missiles removed from Cuba in exchange for the U.S. removing missiles from Turkiye. He is famous for this quote afterward. "I know that most of those fellows will consider me a coward for the rest of my life for what I said today, but perhaps we need a coward in the room when we are talking about nuclear war."In 1963, Stevenson had been to Dallas and found them particularly hostile towards him and Kennedy. He warned Kennedy's advisors about his concerns regarding the president's upcoming trip to Texas. On Nov. 22nd Stevenson was hosting the ambassador of Chile when he was informed of Kennedy's death. He continued as Ambassador to the UN until his death in 1965Adlai Stevenson was commemorated in 1966 on a 5-cent US Postage stamp. Also known forHe promoted public service as the highest calling. Promoted stepping away from the nuclear precipice and asked all nationalities to unite around their common humanity.
