Description: Eighteen inch (18") high antique Adirondack trapper splint wood backpack basket in very good condition with black leather carrying straps. Rare bulbous midsection. A splint wood basket is a container with a bottom and sides made from woven or braided splints that cross at right angles. Splint baskets are often used for hunting, backpacking, and carrying items like produce, feed, or firewood, game, and for storage. The baskets are made by shaving splints from a log, cutting them to the right width, and weaving them together. Adirondack pack baskets are a traditional part of the Adirondack region of New York State. Adirondack pack baskets are woven from black ash or willow. They are one of the oldest surviving traditions in the Adirondacks. Condition: very good with only a small missing piece on the bottom (photo) that does not affect functionality or esthetics. The black leather strapping is strong and functional. The basket has a beautiful untouched patina. Measures: 10" opening, 18" high, 16.5. wide at middle, 12.5" x 9" base Circa: mid-late 1800s
