Description: RARE, hard-to-find early book on subject of alcoholism. Using a disease-model, this is a forward thinking work. From flyleaf: "The alsoholic is a man who over drinks. He is in no way different from the diabetic who overeats. Both of these disturbances have been pinned under the powerful dissecting lens of psychosomatic medicine." Dedication page: "This book is an exposition of the newest ethically accredited psychiatric approach to the increasingly grievous situation caused by the so-called problem drinker." 190 pages. In very nice condition. Some light toning of pages, due to age.Comes with original dust jacket. The dj does have some light wear and areas with some tearing and paper loss, though it is on the whole intact and still attractive. Upon request, I am happy to provide a library-style protective jacket for the book, prior to shipment. One of the most important sections "is given over to the 10 page Coadjuvant [questionnaire] which if read earnestly and followed according to the easy instructions, will provide an excellent starting point for future recover. if the drinker gives this section his sincere attention he should be able to meet the eye of the bartender steadily and with a smile." The questionnaire is deeply personal and insightful. And as you might expect, somewhat dated in its inquiries. It delves deeply into childhood experience and trauma and other psychological concerns of the day that would inform the condition of the adult. It is quite a refreshing, interesting and different "take" on the issue of substance abuse. By not assigning it to a moral or spiritual failing of the drinker--that came from the church and other sources. And not tying the person up in too many psychological knots either. Early books and materials from this time period are hard (and harder to come by!).Great piece to add to your collection. Enjoy!
