Description: Usual library markings and card pouch. Suitable for study and research. Formerly belonged to college library. Assumed first English translation edition. Translator's preface is dated 1887. Print dste on title page is 1887. Cover spine leather is scuffed. Spine ends rubbed. Top of spine feathered. Top spine corners have small splits. Heavy wear on board edges and corners. Scuffs on boards. Gilt spine lettering is still good., with moderate dulling. Binding is together. There is spreading or separation between some pages, but no wide splits. Webbing is visible on some outer back pages. Still feels fairly firm when opening covers or turning pages. All pages are attached. Front page edges are rough-cut. Some front edges were cut more roughly and have small tears. Pages are generally in good condition. No marking noted in text. Noted a few blemishes such as small ink stain, light smudges. Saw nothing of great significance or that would impact legibility. Pages are mildly age'tanned. Rear endpaper has 3 inch tear near spine. Hinge paper split at rear endpaper. Webbing visible, but rear board is still adequately attached by webbing and adhesive. Would benefit from taping. 198 woodcut illustrations. 525 page 9.9 inches x 7.1 inches. Would make a good companion to the other de Bary book listed, Comparative Anatomy of the Phanerogams and Ferns, 1884.
