Prior to joining the Lincoln Administration in 1861, he had served two terms in the Massachusetts State Senate, and run unsuccessfully as Vice President for the Free Soil Party in the election of 1848. Reporting as U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom in May of 1861, Adams reached it only to be met by the Queen’s proclamation recognizing the South and expressing sympathy for it. His efforts played a key role in keeping Britain neutral while Southern agents were trying to achieve foreign recognition for the Confederacy. This required him to conduct dialogue with both sides and to monitor the British connections related to the supply of commerce to the South for war purposes. This extraordinary collection of letters from the Civil War provide excellent inside into his role in these and other matters.
