This is a 14.25" x 9.5" Original and Vintage limited edition woodcut on paper by the Japanese printmaker Oda Kazuma, 1882-1956. The image is of a view of figures on the 'Great Bridge at Matsue'. Very good condition with the left margin measuring 1/4". Unframed. The Biography Follows: Kazuma Oda was born on November 11, 1881, in Shiba-Koen, Tokyo, Japan. His artistic pursuits led him to study painting and lithography. Oda's inclination toward lithography, an unconventional choice for a Japanese artist during that period, stemmed from his brother's ownership of a lithograph print shop in Osaka, where the family resided. A multifaceted artist, Kazuma Oda worked as a painter, printmaker, and illustrator. Remarkably, he participated in two concurrent and competing art movements: the sosaku hanga art movement and the shin hanga art movement. His preference for lithography, an unusual technique for sosaku hanga and not favored among shin hanga artists, marked his unique approach. Within the circle of shin hanga prints enthusiasts, Kazuma Oda gained recognition primarily for a woodblock print of peonies published by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1924. This particular print surfaced in the market following the passing of collector and dealer Robert O. Muller. Presumably, the woodblock print was carved and printed by Watanabe's artisans based on a painting by Kazuma Oda. Similar to many admired shin hanga prints today, these were often created after paintings by established artists, exemplified by the bijin prints by Ito Shinsui published by Watanabe and others. Kazuma Oda predominantly thrived as a sosaku hanga artist. From 1916 to 1919, he produced two lithograph series featuring Tokyo (20 prints) and Osaka town views. He played a significant role as a founding member of various sosaku hanga artist groups, including the Nihon Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai in 1918, the Yofu Hanga-kai ("Western-style woodblock prints") in 1924, and the Nihon Hanga Kyôkai in 1931. The available art prints attributed to Kazuma Oda today primarily consist of lithographs. Nevertheless, he also created woodblock prints in the sosaku hanga style, carving and printing them himself—adhering to the ethos of sosaku hanga artists: self-designed, self-carved, self-printed, and self-published. Kazuma Oda passed away in Tokyo on March 8, 1956. As ever this is guaranteed 100% money back, to be as represented.
