New York: Thomas Crowell & Co., 1887.The stories in this volume include: "The Invaders," "The Wood-Cutting Expedition," "An Old Acquaintance," "Lost on the Steppe," "Polikushka," and "Kholstomir: A Story of a Horse." Original olive cloth boards, gilt lettering, rule and eagle design on front board and spine; floral design endpapers; 343 pp. , followed by 2 pp. of publisher's ads. NEAR FINE (Near Pristine) hardcover with clean cloth and sharp corners. Previous owner's names 2X on floral endpages, no other markings. One lower corner slightly rubbed but still sharp, not bumped. Some minor dust soil at top page edge. Practically no signs of handling to pages themselves, page ends equally clean. Tight, perfectly square copy with hinges sound and sturdy. A well-made book that has been well cared-for. The first translation into English of these six important Tolstoy stories. 2.) KATIA (a.k.a. Family Happiness), the first U.S. edition and first printing. New York: Gottsberger, 1887. Date of 1887 on copyright page and 1887 on title page, as required. Very Good Plus in original olive/brown cloth decorated in gilt. Small previous owner's paper label on front pastedown with name of J.H. Brewster, Jr. (very small - about one inch wide). Minor wear and rubbing to cloth at spine ends and corners, which are still mostly sharp. Clean text. Crack at first free endpage though this does not affect the soundness of the binding, which is still sturdy. Bit of dustiness to the binding and to the brown coated endpages. 14pp adverts at end. A nice copy, much nicer than normally encountered. One of the best novellas by one of the giants of Russian literature. Katia is about a young wife and her much older husband who come to realize they want different things out of life. Their ideals of happiness are not the same. The tone of the book is set by the opening line: "We were in mourning for our mother, who had died the preceding autumn, and we had spent all the winter alone in the country--Macha, Sonia and I." 3.) CHILDHOOD, BOYHOOD, YOUTH London: Walter Scott, 1889. Believed first British edition not dated. Very Good with a previous owner's name in pencil on title page. No other owner markings. Spine ends and corners slightly rubbed. Binding sturdy. Text very clean. 388pp. 4.) SEBASTOPOL. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1887. Very Good. Previous owner's name on front pastedown. 241 pp. + 12 pp. ads. at rear. Translated by Frank Millet. Introduction by W.D. Howells. Corners slightly rubbed. Interior is clean. Binding is tight and sound. 5.) THE TWO PILGRIMS. New York: Thomas Crowell, 1887. Very Good in white decorative covers with partial dust jacket laid in (front panel present including front flap and rear flap is also present). Translated from the Russian by Nathan H. Doyle. Tiny chip or wormhole affecting first pages. 6.) DIE KREUTZER SONATA Berlin: Drud und Verlag von Beichert, no date. Presumed first German edition. Very Good Plus in decorative cloth with floral endpages. No owner markings. Text very clean. Sound and sturdy binding. Includes two other novellas: Walks in the Light and The Novel Marriage.
