Here is my Tribute David Gilmour Signature Relic Stratocaster: This exceptional guitar not only captures the iconic sound of the rock legend but also replicates the visual character of David Gilmour's original "Black Strat" with meticulous attention to detail, including the distinctive shortened tremolo arm. This is one of my top builds and I found this process time consuming, detailed and harder than Eric Clapton's "Blackie." I took on the challenge and was extremely happy with the outcome.HARDWARE: As much as possible, I always use actual FENDER O.E.M hardware. I enjoy replicating older types of vintage fender guitars, and being true to the hardware. Such as rounded screws heads for modern strats and larger counter sunk pickup screws & counter sunk 5 way switch screws and rubber spacers on the pickups for vintage strats. I use Fender Relic'd vintage tuners with Kluson bushing adapters where needed. All my jacks are top-notch Switchcraft, jack plates by Fender. My 5 way switches are upgraded and vintage style CRL spring loaded, or Fender Oaks Grisby. On this DG I added a mini-toggle switch allowing the neck pickup to be paired with either of the other pickups as per the original.All my neck plates are custom upgraded, my butterfly string trees have white relic'd plastic spacers and strap buttons are Fender. Most importantly, my Tremolo block is vintage wide spaced 2 3/16” "Fender Vintage Series" bridges, Fender stamped saddles with matching Tremolo bar with Fender claw springs and screws. I always include appropriate Allen adjustments wrenches for the saddles and truss rods. The Gilmour "Green Letter" Knobs are true Fender and pick up covers came with the pickups and aged as well. The switch tip is the rounder vintage "Football" style, not the newer pointed type, and the pickguard is Relic'd, period correct for the year. All of these along with the Parchment Pickup covers are hand relic'd my me in a days-long process of using my "Secret Sauce" Vintage / Tinting and relic'ing techniques. The GILMOUR Pickguard isAll are relic’d by me and aged to just the right look, then all hardware is lubed for function. The artistry is in the details. BODY: This body has been custom painted by me, to show my version of "David Gilmour's - BLACK STRAT" Tribute Stratocaster, adding my personal relic and road worn aging to it. To be clear, I do this by free painting and relicing by hand, NO stencils here. Photos of Mr. Gilmour and his guitar are only for comparison. This is a 1980's Fender Japan body. It's a 3 piece Ash, weighing in a 4.2 lbs. I pay a premium price for these bodies due to it's age, true fender licensed specifications and authentic Fender FujiGen roots. Fender exported MIJ ’57 Reissue Strats, made in the highly regarded FujiGen Gakki factory. From 82-84, and for over a decade until the latter part of 1995, Japanese ’57 Reissues from the same factory were Fender guitars (starting off with standard ‘E’-prefixed serial numbers). At the time (84-85) these parts were Higher Quality Re-Issues than in the USA. The CBS Company took note and began enhancing their quality. This is easily seen on the contours of the body, having completely smooth and thin shape at the belly and shoulder. Specs:Wood: Alder Pieces: 3Bridge Holes: Vintage 2 3/16 wide Bridge Route: Vintage Pickup Route: S/S/S I first stripped it completely down to the raw wood. Afterwards, I filled all blemishes, sealed the body and sand smooth again. Lots of wet sanding going on here during final prep. The body is painted with an 100% nitrocellulose from Gracey’s Vintage Finishes.First, this is not a STENCIL. Each job is unique. I then paint it with an aged vintage 100% nitrocellulose 3-Tone SUNBURST, Amber, Red and Black finish - paint by Gracey’s Vintage Finishes. FYI: A couple D.G. nonstandard relic necessities for this guitar. 1. Gilmour, at one time, had a Floyd Rose Tremolo block installed. It didn't work out and he had it repaired and filled in. After years of use the paint around the repair cracked - thus you have the "Floyd Rose Repair" lines around the tremolo block. 2. Gilmour, at one other time, had a side Jack Input like a Telecaster, installed. Again, that didn't work for him - thus you have the "Jack Input Repair" indention on the bottom of the guitar. 3. I had to simulate these before painting by measuring, scraping and scratching them out to my satisfaction. Then only did the painting begin.Once the basic color is laid down, I start my relic work. I spent many, many hours' chipping, scraping, tinting and detailing the front, back, edges and horns, then re-relicing it to my satisfaction. Constantly checking against MANY photos and updating my work until I'm satisfied. I take great care in getting the relic on the front and back to be as close, and thick as possible as you can see by the photos. This is a week's long process, not days. I relic the shoulder, as well as the lower horn edges where you would get case burn as well as heavy cutting on the back to mimic heavy belt rash (back) and hand strumming wear (front), as well as the lower edges where you would get case burn. Lastly, I add some scuffing and nitro Nitro tints to it to mimic body sweat and hand oils, then added a last topcoat of clear nitro to seal it. I then do the final super fine sanding, multiple times prepping for buffing.Thin “Nitro” also enhances the guitars tonal qualities, especially when “Relic’d” with open wood patches, like SRV’s. Clapton’s Blackie & John Mayer's guitars. This is one of my most serious, costly and time intensive painting processes I do to my guitars. Once the original Sunburst finish is complete, I then added 3 coats of Black Nitro on top with another couple of clear on top of that.ELECTRONICS: This is the "HEART" of the instrument. It all begins with a very nice, unique and authentic original feature of the Black Strat, the GILMOUR - ACRYLIC GUARD, with rounded and polished edges around the entire Perimeter of the black single Ply guard. My electronics are also designed to replicate the vintage “Loaded Pick Guard” style, look and sound of DAVID GILMOUR's guitar, with upgraded & more expensive pots, switch, vintage load capacitors, wiring, cream paper masking tape, shielding& gripper washers. All my pickguards have an added upgraded copper shielding, for grounding connectivity and noise reduction, dedicated to the potentiometers and CRL 5-way switch, to maximize electrical conductivity and help avoid noise. On this DG I added a mini-toggle switch allowing the neck pickup to be paired with either of the other pickups as per the original. All wiring is done with cloth push back, pre tinned vintage wire as well. It's a custom hand built vintage style with perfect function. This is a PREMIUM Custom Build with some of the best original pickups available. These were all matched with Correct Parchment colored pickup covers and Green Letter knobs, which I lightly relic’d. Bridge - SSL-5: Mr. Gilmour needed a pumped-up sound for his famous Black Strat, so Seymour wound what became the SSL-5 Custom Staggered for the Bridge. This is a special overwound single coil bridge pickup that measures 13.8 Ω on the meter, with alnico 5 rod magnets. It delivers higher output, more sustain and great harmonics, without losing the sparkle that makes a Strat sound so unique.Middle - Custom Shop Fender 69's: The Fender® Custom Shop Custom '69 pickup offers you a unique construction and vibe. This middle pickup that measures 5.9 Ω on the meter, and can deliver the coveted clear, transparent highs, thumping lows, and bleeding midrange response and feel that define electric guitar tone as we know it. This is built using height staggered Alnico V magnets and a special gray bobbin.Neck - Custom Shop Fat 50's: Custom Shop Black Fiber Bottoms, wax potted, cloth lead wires and these are slightly Hotter, (Overwound) and the Neck pickup measures 6.4 Ω on meter. It is wax potted, cloth lead wires and these are slightly Hotter, (Overwound) and the Neck and Middle inductance is 2.4 Henries. This single-coil pickups is crafted to faithfully replicate the cutting tones reminiscent of 1954 Stratocaster guitars. It features staggered, hand beveled, Alnico 5 magnets and Formvar magnet wire wound for classic bell tones, and clear harmonic enhancement. All wires are full length and have no splices. The Wiring Harness is done to complete vintage specifications.* It has upgraded new CTS Premium Smooth Taper 250K Split Shaft Speed Pots on the volume and tone. If you haven't tried these, you'll be very pleased. They are called "Speed Pots" because they can be easily and speedily adjusted with your little finger as you play. They are matched with a new upgraded premium vintage style spring loaded CRL 5 way switch, as per the original. On this DG I added a mini-toggle switch allowing the neck pickup to be paired with either of the other pickups as per the original.* Also, the capacitor is NOS Dime vintage CRL 0.5 microfarad value / 75v. This is shielded with vintage style yellow tubing. Caps don't add tone, they allow for a wider range of "Warmth" to be added, giving you more tone distinctions as you adjust your knobs.NECK: It's built with an original NEW Fender Licensed "ALL PARTS" one piece maple neck, just from this project. It has the standard vintage walnut Truss Rod plug on the Headstock and Truss Rod adjustment at the heel. That was not enough for this guitar so I spend many, many hours working my magic on the headstock and fretboard, adding the intense wear marks, dings and finger-burn relic'ing as well as the back of the neck wear. I match photos and measurements to give it the most realistic look possible. Truss Rod location: Headstock Heel width: 2 & 3/16 in1st Fret: 0.86 in. 12th Fret: 0.96 in.* I also RESHAPE my necks to be as accurate to vintage spec with regards to having completely smooth contours on the back of the neck, as do the early 60’s Fender Stratocaster Necks. On this neck, I’ve reshaped both the back of the headstock where your hand meets the head, and the beginning of the heel, where your hand meets the heel hump - Smoothness with functionality for vintage comfort. * The TUNERS are period correct Premium real original relic'd KLUSON DELUXE and the string tree is vintage Fender period correct with plastic spacer. * I also don't like the "STICKY" feel of fresh Nitro, so after the final polishing and shine I smooth back of the neck to a "MATT" finish. I do this by gently using 0000 steel wool all over the back of the neck. This idea came from a customer, and I agreed so much I'm now doing it on all my necks that I sell. It's easily reversed to a gloss shine by rubbing it down with "MEGUIARS" ultimate compound. This is what I use for my final polish. I always setup the neck (truss rod), frets and strings to minimize the string height and fret buzz while keeping the neck as straight as allowed. Occasionally, I used brass neck spacers to ensure correct neck angle for string height & proper neck alignment. The neck plays low and easy, with a completely new setup to an average string height of 1/16 at the 12th fret. I've added new Ernie Ball super slinky .09 strings, and then completed a saddle/bridge adjustment for perfect string height and playability. I always include appropriate Allen adjustments wrenches for the saddles and truss rods. Like Eric Clapton said during his interview on his guitar "Brownie": What I would always look for on a Strat, was a maple neck that had been wore out. You know it was like a restaurant, if there’s lots of people in there, you know there’s got to be good food, so I know I just thought that if it all those kinds of worn-out patches, it meant that it had been, you know, well favored.” - and this one’s been "Favored" like a rock and roll work horse and looks the part at a fraction of the cost.I’m a Wounded Warrior and have been rescuing and rebuilding guitars for the last ten years, as a form of therapy.
