Description: 5 ~ 20 Seeds AMERICAN HAZELNUT TREE Seeds Cold Hardy Home Gardening Seeds Hazelnut trees (Corylus avellana) grow only 10 to 20 feet tall with a spread of 15 feet, making them suitable for all but the tiniest home gardens. You can let them grow naturally as a shrub, or prune them into the shape of a small tree. Either way, they are an attractive addition to the home landscape. Let’s learn more about hazelnut growing. Zones: 4~8 Hazelnut trees, also called filbert trees, are hardy in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 through 8. When growing hazelnuts in the coldest part of this range, choose American hazelnuts, which are more cold tolerant than the European types. Temperatures below 15 F. (-9 C.) after the flowers bloom can cause crop loss. Hazelnuts need 15 to 20 feet of space to spread. They adapt to almost any soil as long as it is well-drained, but perform best in a soil with plenty of organic matter. How to germinate seeds: Fill a bucket of water and submerge the seeds for at least 48 hours. Nick the shell of the seeds with a file to aid in germination. Using the thin edge of a file, carefully file through in just one place on the top side of shell, just enough to penetrate the shell without damaging the flesh of the seed inside. Fill 1-gallon pots with a lightweight sterilized potting mix. Plant the seeds about 1 to 2 inches deep or the equivalent of twice the diameter of the seed. One end is slightly more pointed than the other and should point down in the pot. The other end, which should point up, is almost flat and has a lighter color and different texture than the bottom end. Cover the seed and firmly tamp down the soil. Water the seeds and leave the pots outside over the winter. Check them occasionally to make sure they remain slightly moist but preferably not constantly saturated. Keep the seeds consistently moist once the weather warms in spring. The seedlings will emerge slowly over a period of several weeks or more. Grow the young seedlings in partial shade for the first summer and plant them in the ground in the fall.
