Description: 50+GREEN MALABAR SEEDS - Mung Toi Khong leo Germination 85 % (Tested) Harvest season: 2022 Organic Green Malabar Spinach Vietnamese Mung Toi Khong leo Healthy Delicious Vegetable Common Name: Malabar spinach – Mong toi Scientific Name: Basella alba (green stemmed version) Also known as Ceylon spinach, gui, acelga trapadora, bratana, libato, vine spinach and Malabar nightshade. Family: Basellaceae Light: Full sun. Tolerates light shade (about 50%), but grows much slower. Malabar spinach plants grow in India and throughout the tropics, primarily in the moist lowlands. While the dark green leaves resemble those of spinach, this is a vine type of plant that thrives in hot temps, even exceeding 90 F. (32 C.) Cool temperatures cause Malabar spinach to creep. It is grown as an annual, but grows like a perennial in regions that are frost free. This Malabar spinach is perennial, but it will die by first frost- is for Sub-Tropical, Tropical Climates, heated greenhouses, or possibly as a potted indoor plant. Prepare the seeds: Scarify the seed with a file, sandpaper or even a knife to speed germination, which will take three weeks or longer at temperatures between 65-75 F. (18-24 C.). Direct sow Malabar spinach seeds in USDA zone 7 or warmer, two to three weeks after the last frost date. Note: If you live in a chillier zone, start the seeds indoors at about six weeks before the last frost. Wait to transplant until the soil has warmed and there is no chance of frost. Transplant the seedlings spaced about a foot apart. Seed Sowing: Add fertilizer to the site where you want to grow the seeds. Dig to mix the fertilizer with soil and make the soil porous. Sow seeds 1/4" deep and approximately 18" apart. Cover with soil and water well, keep the soil moist for the seeds germinate. Some recommend soaking the seed in water overnight to improve germination rates, I prefer direct seeding when temperatures remain above 65F (18C ) in Spring. Harvest: You can harvest the leaves in the beginning. As soon as the plants become big enough, you can pick young leaves and tips. That will promote more side branches and new tips for subsequent harvests. Malabar Spinach is a pick and come again plant. Harvest it again and again over all season whenever you want. Store Seeds: Store seeds away from children. Sealed in their packaging in a cool, dry, dark place. You can store the seeds in a fridge. Never store them in a freezer as the sudden temperature drop is likely to kill them. Do not leave the seed in direct sunlight as the heat generated may kill the seeds. You can sealed your seed in their packaging and put them in an airtight bottle to keep it dry.
