These modules can also be separated, because every module carries the same Maxim MAX7219 chip, and comes with the same power and data connection. MAX7219 is an integrated serial input/output display driver. It can connect a microcontroller to a 7-segment LED display, a bar graph display, or even 64 independent LEDs. It includes a BCD encoder chip, a multi-channel scanning loop segment word driver, and a 8 x 8-bit static RAM for storing display data. Only one external register is used to set the segment current of each LED. A convenient four-wire serial interface connects the display module to a microprocessor or controller. MAX7219 contains a 150uA low-power shutdown mode, and analog and digital brightness control. MAX7219 requires only three IO ports to drive a dot matrix without any flicker!
