It has a date code of the late 1970’s. It is designed primarily for amplifier and switching applications. The device features high breakdown voltages, low leakage currents, low capacity, and a beta useful over an extremely wide current range. This transistor can operate up to 250-Mhz making it ideal for HF applications. The 2N5189 is an ideal RF Amplifier for QRP transmitters. It can be used in both pre-driver stages and driver stages. I have seen numerous circuits on the web using this device as such. Do a Google search for 2N5189 QRP. There are numerous data sheets available as well. Search with Google. Typical output is about 2-Watts (Maybe slightly more if you use a heatsink, not included) Case style is TO-39.
