The Western Naval Task Force was assigned the tasks of planning and executing the special amphibious training and the safe seaborne movements of allied invasion army elements to the Gulf of Salerno; of destroying any enemy forces which threatened the execution of the plan of operations; of landing them over selected assault beaches in coordinated attack; of rendering effective naval gunfire support to the military operations ashore, and of ensuring an ever-increasing degree of orderly logistic maintenance and build-up to the landed military forces as they were being firmly established in the original beachhead, while being joined with the Eighth Army and while proceeding to carry out further operations against the enemy.
