This plate shows a ‘forty pillared’ pavilion perched on the walls of the fort overlooking the river, constructed when the fort was being built in the 1580s and completely destroyed in the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. “Chalees Satoon” is adopted from a Persian word meaning forty pillars. This three-storeyed fortress was constructed by orders of the Emperor on the south-western side. It had an octagonal marble room in the center and ornate marble cupolas. Described by Th Daniells as the best speciman of Mughal architecture in India. The Fort of Allahabad took over 45 years to complete. It is 2280 yards long and 1560 yards wide, 25 gates, 23 bastions, 3 sleeping quarters, 33 mansions, 277 houses, 176 barracks, 2 audience houses, 77 cellars, 5 wells and a canal connecting fort with river Jumna. It was a self-sustaining walled city. - “Oriental Scenery” (1795-1808). Best known of the Daniell’s work issued in six series with a total of 144 hand-colored aquatint views of their trip through India (1785-1793). This was the most extensive work of it’s kind at the time. This Plate VI is from Part I which consisted of “Twenty Four Views In Hindoostan”. It could purchased in Broadsheet (733mm) and Ocatva (219). - Thomas Daniell, English landscape painter (1749-1840). Royal Academy trained and exhibiting between 1772 and 1784. He also painted in the Orientalist style. He spent seven years in India (1785-1793) accompanied by his nephew William Daniell and published several series of aquatints of that country, first a series of twelve locally produced and tinted in Calcutta (1786-88). After returning to England an extensive illustrated work was produced and titled “Oriental Scenery” in six volumes totaling 144 plates published between 1795-1808. --------------------------------------- Shipping - see "shipping and payments" tab on this page for shipping cost via FedEx Home/Ground or UPS. - contact me for confirmation or additional options. - Local pickup available.--------------------------------------- Selection of items from local estates.
